Dream it

Dream it 〰️

It all began with drawing doodles on my hands in class

I’ve always loved art. School never really held my attention—I was always more interested in drawing, painting, and creating something with my hands. As a kid, I dreamed of growing up to be an artist, but I was constantly told that there was no money in it, that it wasn’t a “real” path. So I took a detour and became a cake decorator instead, turning creativity into something practical and tangible.

Even then, art never left me. Whether on canvas or cake, creating has always been how I express myself. Now, I’m finding my way back to the art I fell in love with in the first place—making work that feels honest, personal, and true to who I’ve always been.

i did study Art for A Level, although that means nothing because (in our art class at least) we were told what to do or what to paint so it took the creativity away. In my studies, I looked to artists like Colin Davidson to study portraits. I enjoyed it immensely, and started experimenting with other tools instead of brushes. I used things like cardboard pieces that I ripped off of boxes, I used forks for hairs and beards-whatever I could get my hands on (or get dirty and never use again), I put to good use.

Leaving A Level, I went on to NRC to study a foundation degree so I could go onto study Art in university. However, I had countless people ask me “where’s the money in that?” or “you’ll be a teacher then?” So I let these people get in my head and pulled out of my university applications, to which my tutor yelled “YOU IDIOT” incredulously.

Now, here we are 12 years later, I am a cake decorator. You’ll never catch me at an office job. As much as I love cake decorating, creating new things and paintings is where I like to throw my energy.
